Back-to-school season asks a lot of children, and of the adults supporting them. New schedules, new faces, louder hallways, and longer days can unsettle even kids who usually do well. A thoughtful transition plan will not remove every bump, but it can make the first weeks feel more manageable.
At Oasis Therapy Group, we help Phoenix families prepare for school shifts with practical routines, clearer expectations, and support that fits both home and classroom.
Start the transition before day one
Sudden change is harder than gradual change. In the week or two before school starts, gently move bedtime and wake-up times closer to the school schedule. Practice packing the backpack, laying out clothes, and walking through the morning order of operations.
- Preview the day: talk through arrival, lunch, recess, and pickup in simple language
- Visit if possible: a walk past the building or classroom can lower first-day surprises
- Keep evenings lighter: protect wind-down time so mornings start with more capacity
- Name one or two goals: “hang up backpack” or “ask for help once” beats an impossible list
Use visuals and short cues
Many children do better with a picture schedule, a checklist by the door, or a short verbal script for hard moments (“First backpack, then shoes”). Keep cues consistent across caregivers so your child is not decoding different instructions from every adult.
If school staff and your therapy team can share the same wording for transitions, your child spends less energy guessing and more energy participating.
Expect a settling period
The first few weeks often include more fatigue, more big feelings, and occasional skill regression. That does not mean the year is off track. It usually means your child is working hard to adapt. Notice effort, keep routines steady, and adjust supports when something repeatedly falls apart.
Celebrate small wins: a smoother drop-off, a completed morning step, a calmer recovery after a tough moment.
When extra support helps
If transitions keep overwhelming your child, or your household, school-based ABA and caregiver coaching can help build skills for arrivals, classroom routines, peer moments, and end-of-day recovery.
